RESILIENCE IN THE FACE OF LOSS: Navigating Kali Yuga – The Age of Destruction

The cycles of life mirror the cycles of the universe. Just as our bodies move through phases, the universe follows its own rhythm. In Vedic Cosmology, this is expressed through the concept of the Yugas—four ages that collectively span 12,960 years. We are currently in Kali Yuga, an era defined as the "Age of Destruction," lasting approximately 1,296 years.

Whether or not you resonate with Hindu cosmology, the evidence of destruction in our world is undeniable. But amidst this chaos, we are faced with pivotal questions:

What is humanity’s role in this time? How do we rebuild?

These cycles, though daunting, also offer opportunities for growth—a spiral of spiritual evolution.

As the old structures crumble, it is our responsibility to rise, beginning with internal transformation. We must examine our beliefs, our sense of accountability, and how we live.

More than ever, our actions matter, and resilience becomes our most vital tool.

A Personal Reflection

The recent wildfires have been a stark reminder that nothing in life is guaranteed. Walking through the streets of Los Angeles, I can’t help but feel the fragility of it all. Just miles away, entire neighborhoods have been reduced to ash.

Our institutions, once seemingly unshakeable, now face dismantling.

And yet, in the face of this instability, the call is not to retreat but to show up.

As a new mother, the weight of this responsibility feels especially profound. The world my child is inheriting is turbulent, yet it is also full of potential for renewal. So, I ask again: How do we rebuild?

Five Ways to Cultivate Resilience in Kali Yuga

  1. Foster Community Connections
Resilience thrives in strong, supportive networks. Building and nurturing community is foundational.

  2. Recognize and Address Trauma
Natural disasters and collective loss leave deep scars. Trauma lives in the body, making healing work—both individual and communal—essential.

  3. Mindset Matters
In challenging times, negativity can dominate. Cultivating a positive, growth-oriented mindset is critical. Belief in spiritual evolution provides hope and strength.

  4. Embrace Spiritual Evolution Through Challenge
Personal and communal growth often arises during life’s most difficult moments. Coming together to discuss how we can evolve amid adversity keeps us inspired and activated.

  5. Reimagine Sustainable Living
As we rebuild, let’s rethink our cities. Los Angeles has an opportunity to embrace natural building methods such as adobe and cob. These earth-based materials align with resilience and sustainability.
